Please see the attached Bible Study Outline “the Role of the Holy Spirit” which is the next topic in our Quarter Series on the Foundation of the Christian Faith.  Our main text is John 14:12 – 26 and the key learning points are as follows:

1.     The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity.  He is co-equal with God the Father, and God the Son and is present throughout the Old Testament from creation to the prophets. 

2.     Jesus and the Father sent the Holy Spirit to apply the work of salvation to the lives of believers as our indwelling Helper (John 14:16).

3.     The Holy Spirit reveals Christ to us and establishes Christlikeness in us as we cooperate with Him through hearing and obeying (John 14:16; 15:26; 16:13-15).

This SUnday, we conclude our quarter series on the person and work of the Holy Spirit. And fittingly, the concluding topic is ‘The Holy Spirit Unites us’

 Key Learning Points Include:

1.      The Holy Spirit unites the believer with Christ and places him in the body of Christ, the Church. 

2.      The believer has a part to play in this unity of the Spirit. We do that with the graces which the Holy Spirit provides.

3.      The Holy Spirit unites the Church in faith and doctrine. The theological foundation for the unity of the Church is the work of the Spirit through the written word of God that He inspired. The word of God is truth (John 17:17, Ps. 119:160). The unity of the Church is the work of the Spirit with and through the written word of God.

May the word of God take root in our hearts and bear fruit to His glory and praise.

This Sunday, our Bible study will be exploring the work of the Holy Spirit in giving us spiritual gifts. Attached is the outline for your perusal.

Key Learning Points:

1.     Spiritual gifts are divinely given capacities to perform the various needs in the Church. Just as the human body has members with different capacities, so individual Christians forming the church as the body of Christ have different capacities for ministry to the Body.

2.     The manifestation of the Spirit is given to every Christian for the benefit of all. Spiritual gifts are God’s provision to equip His children for Ministry “in ways beyond mere human capability and ingenuity”.

3.     We are free to desire spiritual gifts. But they are bestowed by the sovereign choice of God and need to be exercised in the power and under the direction of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit does not give us spiritual gifts for our own vainglory, but for the service of the Body and for the benefit of all. 

May God grant us grace to faithfully exercise our gifting for the benefit of all.

This Sunday, we shall be looking at another exciting aspect of the work and ministry of the Holy Spirit in the believer – helping us bear spiritual fruit. The outline is attached herewith for your perusal.

Key Learning points:

1.     Though we are saved when we believe in Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection, yet that faith must go beyond mere intellectual conviction to manifest in the way we serve each other in love. And that must be by the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

2.     The sinful nature is incapable of knowing and obeying God. That is why the Holy Spirit must produce His fruit in us. We cannot produce the fruit of the Spirit by ourselves.

3.     Though the Holy Spirit produces His fruit in us, we must actively play our part by walking, living and being led by the Spirit. And we do this by living by the word of God.

May the fruit of the Spirit be manifest in us in increasing measure.

This Sunday, we shall be considering the teaching ministry of the Holy Spirit. 

Key Learning Points:

1.      Just like Jesus’ initial disciples, we cannot bear hearing and knowing all that Jesus wants us to all at once. So, like them, we need the Holy Spirit who will teach us the truth of God at the appropriate time and measure (John 16:12-13)

2.      The human mind cannot be relied on for truth because of man’s inclination towards evil. That is also why Jesus bracketed what the historical and revelatory guidance of the Holy Spirit will be so that we don’t give in to the imaginations of our hearts and the devil’s deception.

3.       When we seek God in truth through prayer and regular study of His word, we are led and taught by the Holy Spirit.

May we be better students so that the Holy Spirit’s teaching ministry will bear much fruit in our midst.

These studies on the Person and work of the Holy Spirit have blessed me greatly. I hope you have been blessed by them too.

We continue this week with a look at the liberating work of the Holy SPIRIT. Attached is the outline for our perusal. I encourage you to do the study ahead of our meeting on Sunday (Zoom or in-person).

Key Learnings:

1. Liberty is the state of being free – a release from bondage and slavery. Jesus came with the mission to secure our freedom.
2. Liberty the Spirit gives us is freedom from sin, death, and the condemnation of the law. Our lives in Christ should be spirit-filled and sin should no longer have dominion over us.
3. Liberty has often been misunderstood by many Christians. The Liberty of the Holy Spirit should be interpreted and applied correctly, if we are to impact our world with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Christ has set us free! This means we are really free. Now hold on to your freedom and don’t ever become slaves of the Law again (Galatians 5:1).

We continue our series on the Person and Ministry of the Holy Spirit with a look at the intercessory ministry of the Holy Spirit. See attached outline for your reference.

Key Learning Points

1. Our God is so kind. He gave us His Holy Spirit to intercede for us in addition to all the other things He does for us. God did not even want to leave us to be praying for ourselves all by ourselves, He made provision for our weaknesses. 
2.  Our weaknesses include not knowing what to pray for as we ought. Also, maybe not even sure of God’s will in that situation. Hence, the Holy Spirit prays for us according to the will of God. So we have confidence that we are covered because God will ALWAYS answer the prayers and intercession of the Holy Spirit.
3.  The ministry of intercession of the Holy Spirit helps conform our prayer to God’s will. This should give us confidence, hope, courage, and boldness to live fearlessly for God because that is our assurance of victory.

May the Lord continue to comfort us as we come to grips with the passing of our own Uncle Chike. one of those situations when we don’t know what to pray.

Key Learnings:

1.     The gospel of Jesus Christ has the tendency to draw hostility towards any who proclaim it. So, we need great courage to faithfully proclaim it.

2.     Boldness cannot be stored. The Holy Spirit gives it when and where we need it.

3.     The same Holy Spirit who was in the Apostles also lives in all who are in Christ. Like them, we should be spurred by the urgency to tell others about Jesus and so pray for boldness rather than seek our safety in the face of threats and danger.
