INTRODUCTION

You can tell what’s coming next by the opening words of someone’s speech. And judging by Paul’s opening words in 2 Timothy 2 and some of the other words he uses, you get an idea of the burden on is heart as he continues his last words to Timothy. And that concern is for Timothy (and all believers) to stay focused on the important things – Jesus Christ and His righteousness.

As you read through 2 Tim. 2:1-26, what are some of the key words with which Paul communicates the seriousness of the issues at stake? Examples are:

  • Verse 1 ‘… be strongin the grace that is in Christ Jesus’
  • Verse 2 ‘… entrust to reliable men …’

Can you identify any other key words? See v. 3 …..……………….; v. 4 ………………………… v. 5 ……………………; v. 9 ……………………; v.10 …………………; v.14 …………………; v. 15 ………………………; v. 16……….………..; v. 23 ……………………………

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. In what ways is the Christian life like soldiering or like competing in an athletic games?
  2. Popular teachings of our day, in songs and messages suggest that ‘me I no go suffer…’ If so, how do think Paul’s teaching: ‘endure hardship …’ and ‘join with me in suffering for the gospel …’ fit into the life of a believer today?
  3. In 2 Tim. 2:22, we are asked to flee youthful lust.
  4. What does it mean to ‘flee youthful lust’?
  5. What are some examples of ‘youthful lust’?
  6. Do you think these issues listed in (b) above pertain only to the young? Why or why not?
  7. Why are we to flee and not resist? See also 1 Tim. 6:11
  8. What are practical ways of fleeing the listed ‘youthful lust’? See v. 4 – 8, 16, 21-23
  9. In what ways do you think the concepts of endurance, suffering, soldiering, etc. can help in dealing with youthful lust?
