Quarter Theme: Standing On God’s Promises

Topic: Peace and Goodwill from the birth of Jesus

Texts:Luke 2:10-14

Memory Verse: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” (Luke 2:14)

INTRODUCTION

“In the same region there were shepherds staying out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord flashed and shone around them, and they were terribly frightened.” (Luke 2:8-9). In this biblical account of Luke 2, angels appeared to shepherds revealing to them the fulfillment of God’s promise to send Christ to the world.

The most amazing thing now followed: “Then suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host (angelic army) praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest [heaven], And on earth peace among men with whom He is well-pleased.” AMP (Luke 2:13-14). On announcing the news of Jesus’ birth, all heaven literally broke into an unprecedented joyous celebration! The great promise of redemption had been fulfilled.

One core message from the Angel is that peace is not separated from righteousness or holiness.  It rest “on those with whom He is well pleased”. If there is one thing that you should remember from this, it is the principle that peace can never be separated from righteousness. These two things, peace and righteousness, always go together. In other words, it means that where there is no righteousness, there will be no peace. Only where there is righteousness or holiness will there be peace. This is a spiritual and eternal principle of peace that is found throughout the whole Bible and emphasized at the birth of Jesus.

God gave us His greatest, choicest gift, for He bestowed His only Son. God’s good-will becomes even more apparent when we contemplate our own guilt. He wants us to extend such goodwill to those around us. Thank you to everyone for your participation in 2016 home fellowships and in particular this last one for the year. Wishing you a very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous new year!

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION

  1. From Luke 2:14 – Discuss ways in which we can extend Christ’s good-will to others around us?
  2. Read Luke 2:14, Luke 4:18-19 and Matthew 1:21 – Discuss why Jesus come to the world? What practical changes would this knowledge produce in our lives?
  3. From Luke 2: 14, Explain the nature of this peace announced by the angel and who are the people that will experience it? Phil 4: 6-7, Isaiah 9:7

Action: Everyone to take a moment to think of someone you have not forgiven or have not been at peace with these past months. Pray about this, reach out and before the end of this year.
