Theme: Living with Eternity in View
Topic: Growing in Knowledge
Main Texts: Ephesians 4: 7-14; Colossians 1:3-12
Key Verse: Ephesians 4:14 – “Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.” (NIV)
Every endeavour has associated with it a body of knowledge which practitioners must possess. In King Solomon’s commendation of the ant to us (Proverbs 6), we see the ant possessing the knowledge of the times and seasons, informing its collection and storage of foods. A traveller needs the knowledge of how to get to his destination – the means of transport, intermediate stops, appropriate clothing, etc. The knowledge of the Gospel is an absolute requirement for being on the road to eternity in heaven.
1. What are the basic things one needs to know in order to make a choice of salvation? (These things make up “the Gospel in a nutshell”). As we go on any journey for the first time, we learn new things that help us survive the full trip. The Christian’s journey to eternity is no different. Writing to the Philippians, Apostle Paul said, “I want to know Christ–yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death …” (Philippians 3:10 NIV). Note that Paul wrote those words when he was already an apostle of Christ. He also spoke about his prayer for the Colossians: “We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will” (Colossians 1:9). In these and other passages, Paul speaks of a knowledge for our journey to eternity – beyond what is required for salvation. Our knowledge of Christ when we first give our lives to him is only the start of knowing him; we are expected to know him better as we walk with him towards eternity.
2. By likening how a husband and wife get to know each other as they live together, name some specific areas where our knowledge of Christ deepens as we walk with him. The extent to which a husband and wife get to know each other as they live together depends on a number of factors. If they seldom interact with each other, they may not know each other much, even if they live in the same house. There used to be a reality TV game in which a husband and wife are asked, separately, questions to test how much they know of each other. For example, the wife may be asked which side of the face her husband shaves first, and the husband is separately asked the same question. To answer these questions correctly, the couple must really know each other!
3. What specific habits does a Christian need to cultivate to grow in his or her knowledge of Christ, and how can he or she confirm that growth? One of the challenges facing modern Pentecostal churches is the tendency for a congregation to be nurtured in, and therefore grow in a very limited area of knowledge. This is usually determined by the favourite area of the church leader – such as “Manifestations of the Holy Spirit”, “Christian Giving”, “Deliverance”, etc. As we would have seen in discussing Question 2 above, there are several areas of our Christian life where we need to grow in knowledge.
4. What can a local church do to ensure a balanced growth in the knowledge of Christ of its members?
Father, open the eyes of our understanding to see our need for growth in all aspects of our relationship with you, and grant us the grace to learn as your Holy Spirit teaches us, in Jesus’ name Amen.
